Today, Facebook issued an update to their branding. Instead of being “Facebook,” the company will henceforth be known as “Meta.”

In a blog post, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that it’s about time they admitted what everyone already knows: Facebook is now a verb.

The name change from Facebook to Meta is far from unprecedented. Other brands have made similar moves in order to reflect the new reality that their companies have become verbs. How does the Facebook name change affect you?

Apple was founded as a personal computer company but they decided to change their name to reflect the reality that they had become a consumer electronics company. Facebook is a “social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them.”

For example, Google recently changed its name to Alphabet in order to reflect its expansion into different areas such as driverless cars and life sciences. Similarly, the Oxford English Dictionary changed its name to Oxford Dictionaries in order to reflect the fact that it’s not just a dictionary anymore. 

The most recent example of this is when Facebook changed its name to simply ‘Facebook’, removing the ‘The’ entirely. They did this to reflect the fact that Facebook is more than just a social network, it’s an all-encompassing way to connect with people, share experiences, and consume content. 

Facebook is a force to be reckoned with. A lot of people think that social media is a fad but it’ll be around for a while. Facebook is a place for people to connect with people they care about. People will share more on Facebook than they will on any other platform out there.
